Quinella, the pontifex of the Axiom Church, was defeated, but the situation does not appear to have yet calmed down. Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya learns that Rath's mega-float, the Ocean Turtle, was raided after making communication with the outside world. The invaders trigger a sudden short-circuit that damages Kirito's fluorescent light and renders him unconscious. Alice, despite her expulsion due to an unresolved crime, brings the comatose Kirito back to their village of Rulid Village because she is uneasy about the people at the Axiom Church. Now that Kirito has fallen asleep, Alice is leading a routine, calm existence close to the hamlet. Tragically, Alice discovers that the Dark Territory has already begun to encroach into the Human Empire. She assumes her former identity, Alice Synthesis Thirty, and vows to destroy the Dark Territory in order to save the world that Kirito and Eugeo have fought so hard to safeguard.
