Ten years after the war at the Qing Yun Sect, Zhang Xiaofan joined one of the demonic sects, the Ghost King Sect, and changed his name to Gui Li (鬼厉). After helping the Ghost King seize the Blood Refining Hall and the Longevity Hall, Gui Li unintentionally learned that there was still hope to save Bi Yao. He then went to the Southern Xinjiang region and conquered Fenxiang Valley. While there, he had several confrontations with Lu Xueqi.
