Hong Kong fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai clinched the city’s first gold medal in the women’s épée final at the Paris Olympics on July 27, 2024. The world No 1 trailed by 7-1 at one point, but she managed to stun France’s Auriane Mallo-Breton in front of French president Emmanuel Macron, who was watching in the stands. In Hong Kong, the stunning win earned praise from the city’s leader John Lee and residents excited over such an early victory in the Olympic Games.
