Nikuko is a boisterous, jovial, scattered, and passionate woman in a sleepy coastal town in northern Japan. Kikuko, her 11-year-old son, is her polar opposite in many ways. Kikuko is a string-bean of a little girl, thoughtful, quietly curious, and systematic in her attitude to life in this small coastal town. Nikuko embarrasses Kikuko in the same way that any mother of a preteen would, but Nikuko's strong nature makes her exceptionally well-known in a place where Kikuko wants nothing more than to blend in. A surprising revelation from the past threatens to shatter the pair's fragile relationship as Kikuko navigates the everyday social dramas of middle school, supplemented with flashes of magical realism from her ever-present imagination.
