The incident
The Taiping sank on January 27, 1949 after colliding with a cargo ship in the Taiwan Straits. The ship was carrying over 1,000 passengers and crew, many of whom were refugees fleeing the Communists during the Chinese Civil War. Only about 50 people survived.
The film
The Crossing is a two-part Chinese-Hong Kong historical romance-war drama and disaster film directed by John Woo. The film stars Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Song Hye-kyo, Huang Xiaoming, Tong Dawei, and Masami Nagasawa. The first part was released in China on December 2, 2014, and the second part was released on July 30, 2015.
