Subaru Mikazuki, a mystery author who lost both parents in an accident, loves reading and has always hated leaving the house, he finds interacting with people an annoyance because they intrude on his imagination, and the noise of the outside world makes it hard to think. When a chance encounter with a stray cat gives him inspiration for a new novel, he brings it home with him to be his muse. In taking care of the cat, Subaru slowly finds his world becoming more broad, as more people join his life and the cat helps him remember what family is. The stray cat, just trying to survive in a harsh world, decides to follow a human home because he seems to be a good source of food.
