Edge of Darkness 1943

T wo years after the Nazi invasion of Norway, in a small fishing village that is home to 150 German soldiers, the 800 inhabitants await a supply of weapons that will help them start an uprising. The leaders are Karen Stensgard (Ann Sheridan), whose father (Walter Huston) is the town doctor and whose brother has proven his disloyalty to Norway, and Gunnar Brogge (Errol Flynn), a fisherman who intended to sail to England to fight the Nazis but changes his mind upon learning of the arrival of British weapons. Despite the obvious cruelty of the Nazis, the townspeople seem to be taking their time, until an incident sets the stage for action. Directed by Lewis Milestone, who made All Quiet on the Western Front, considered the best anti-war film, Edge of Darkness tells the story of ordinary citizens who become extraordinary heroes when necessary. It is based on the novel written by William Woods and adapted by director Robert Rossen (The Hustler, An Island in the Sun).
