In Indian folklore, especially in Maharashtra and the Konkan coast, Munjya refers to the spirits of unmarried boys who died after a "mundan" ceremony but before they could marry. The mundan ceremony, which involves tying a sacred thread and a munja grass girdle, marks a boy's entry into formal education, and he is known as Munjya after this ritual. Munjya spirits are believed to roam trees, particularly peepal trees, and are seen as restless and possibly mischievous or even malevolent.
