🦀 Hermit Crab Fun Facts
🟐A crab with a rental lifestyle?
Hermit crabs don’t grow their own shells—they find empty ones and move in! And when they outgrow them, it’s house-hunting time all over again.
🟐They form shell queues!
When one hermit crab finds a new shell, others line up by size and wait their turn to upgrade. It’s like a crab real estate chain reaction!
🟐Not true crabs!
Despite the name, hermit crabs aren’t actually true crabs. They’re more closely related to squat lobsters. Impostor alert!
🟐Social little guys
Hermit crabs aren’t hermits at all—they love company! In the wild, they often live in colonies with dozens or even hundreds of crabs.
🟐They use tools!
Some hermit crabs have been spotted using bits of coconut shell or sea debris as shelter when proper shells aren’t available. Talk about resourceful!
🟐They breathe through gills
Even the land-dwelling hermit crabs need moist environments because they breathe through gills. A dry home is a deadly one for them!
