Poseidon Rex (2014)
Synopsis:
Poseidon Rex is a campy, low-budget blend of action, science fiction, and horror that revolves around Jackson Slate, a treasure hunter searching for the fabled Lost Gold of Cortez near a remote Caribbean island. In his quest, Jackson’s use of dynamite inadvertently unleashes a prehistoric predator—Poseidon Rex, a hybrid dinosaur-sea monster with a ravenous appetite for destruction. After surviving an attack that obliterates his boat and crew, Jackson joins forces with Sarah, a marine biologist, to uncover the source of the chaos. When they recover an egg from the ocean depths, their scientific curiosity triggers mayhem as the hatched creature wreaks havoc on the island. As Poseidon Rex grows into a towering menace, the team must battle to contain it before the beast annihilates everything in its path.
Review:
Poseidon Rex is an unabashedly cheesy monster flick that leans heavily on its outlandish premise and schlocky charm. Directed by Mark L. Lester, the film has the hallmarks of a B-movie: over-the-top scenarios, underwhelming CGI, and a formulaic plot peppered with moments of unintentional humor. The pacing is brisk at just over 76 minutes, keeping the action moving even as the dialogue and character development often take a backseat.
While the film struggles with low production values, its tongue-in-cheek tone may appeal to fans of so-bad-it's-good cinema. The titular monster, Poseidon Rex, delivers a few moments of campy spectacle despite the budgetary constraints. However, the film falters in delivering genuine tension or scares, relying instead on a series of predictable action sequences and clichéd characters.
UK Rating:
In the UK, Poseidon Rex is rated 12 by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). This reflects moderate violence, occasional peril, and mild language, making it suitable for viewers aged 12 and above. However, younger audiences may find the creature scenes mildly frightening.
