It changes how the game plays to bring it more in-line with the arcade original, while adding much more action (more rocks and new types of rocks), 11 different power-ups, simultaneous play (2 or 3-player depending on the model), hardware effects (wind when you push thrust, two different rumble motors, a pinball solenoid that knocks the cabinet), and a new eSports app (Major League eSports) that allows players to freely make an account, then have their scores track and they are notified in the event that the score has been beat and where it got beat at.
