I’m Still Here (Portuguese: Ainda Estou Aqui) is a 2024 Brazilian drama film directed by the acclaimed Walter Salles, adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s celebrated 2015 memoir of the same name. With a screenplay by Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega, the film presents a deeply moving exploration of one of Brazil’s most painful historical periods, the Military Dictatorship (1964–1985). At its heart is the story of Eunice Paiva, portrayed by Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro at different points in her life. Eunice is a mother and activist determined to uncover the truth about her husband, Rubens Paiva, a congressman who disappeared after being detained by the regime. The film had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it captivated audiences and critics alike. Its blend of emotional depth and historical resonance drew widespread acclaim. Fernanda Torres’ portrayal of Eunice Paiva was particularly celebrated, with critics hailing it as a performance for the ages. The screenplay, praised for its thoughtful and faithful adaptation of Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s memoir, was awarded Best Screenplay at the festival, cementing the film's position as a major achievement in international cinema. In September 2024, I’m Still Here was selected as Brazil’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. This nomination not only underscores the film’s artistic excellence but also highlights its universal themes of resilience, love, and the pursuit of justice.
