After surviving a car accident in which her parents died, Oriko "Aoko" Seki moves in with her grandmother Mineko at Hananyuyu Inn, a ryokan. There Aoko befriends the ghost of a boy named Makoto "Oribo" Tachiyori, Mineko's late childhood friend. Oko becomes the small innkeeper. At first, she finds her job stressful, but Uribo keeps up her morale. Aoko invites a disheveled man and his son Akane to the inn, because he "doesn't reject anyone." The staff learn of Akane's mother's death and his stubbornness due to his grief. He orders a cake from the kitchen. The inn doesn't have any, but Aoko feels inspired to prepare a new recipe for a "hot bath" pudding that resembles hot spring water. Akane and his father were impressed by the candy and the shrine. Aoko successfully helps everyone and Akane's father writes a review in a magazine praising the inn. At school, Aoko meets Matsuki Akeno, a selfish girl in pink Lolita fashion whose family runs Harunoya, a rival inn. Oribo tries to provoke Matsuki by drawing her face, but the ghost of a blonde girl retaliates by drawing Aoko's face. This ghost is revealed to be Mio, Matsuki's late sister. She makes fun of Aoko and her abilities at the inn. But since Aoko can see her and talk to her, Mio plans to move in to Hananoyu Inn instead of Harunoya. Aoko Suzuki, a low-level demon, whom Aoko receives in a bad mood. Aoko becomes more cheerful, though Suzuki notices that Aoko is starting to lose the ability to see ghosts.
