Reodor Felgen, a bicycle repairman, and his two employees, Ludwig, a true pessimist, and Solan Gundersen, the morning person and natural optimist, reside in Flklypa, 100 miles north, a little east, and above. The race of the decade becomes a reality thanks to the sponsorship of oil sheikh Ben Redich in Fezzan, where they build the "Il Tempo Gigante" vehicle.
